Illinois State Police and firefighters and paramedics from Gurnee responded about 5:23 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2021 to a report of a rollover crash with fire and injuries involving a rolled over semi-trailer truck on I-94 EAST near MilePost 6.5 north of Gurnee near Wadsworth. The crash was located about half way between Stearns Road and Wadsworth Road — a little closer to Stearns Road.
Gurnee firefighters on arrival about 5:33 a.m. reported a semi-trailer truck on its side and over the guardrail. The fire was believed to be extinguished by about 5:35 a.m. Firefighters were working extrication on the northbound side of the tollway.
A vehicle was also struck by a light pole on the northbound lanes of I-94 WEST, and the damaged truck was spilling diesel. The vehicle hit by the lightpole on the I-94 did not initially involve any occupant(s) reporting injuries.
The driver of the truck was extricated by 5:44 a.m. Initially there were no details available regarding the truck driver, but a fatality was reported at the scene.
Firefighters and paramedics from Newport Township Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.
Initially Lanes 1 and 2 were closed on I-94 EAST (southbound) and one lane was closed on I-94 WEST (northbound).
The semi-trailer truck was apparently traveling southbound on I-94 EAST when there was a crash involving the center divider. Part of the truck and/or truck debris was located on the I-94 WEST (northbound lanes).
The passenger vehicle traveling northbound was discovered damaged near MilePost 6.0 with occupant(s) initially reporting no injuries.
