Police, firefighters and paramedics from Lake Villa responded about 11:14 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2021 to a report that a train hit a pedestrian near the Lake Villa Metra station, 129 Railroad Avenue on the Metra’s North Central Service in Lake Villa.
On arrival police, firefighters, and paramedics discovered a man was dead at the scene after he was struck by a northbound Canadian National freight train. Circumstances indicate the incident may have involved a suicide.
Traffic delays reported near Grand Avenue and the railroad crossing. The freight train remained halted for an investigation, and Cedar Avenue, Grand Avenue and Monaville Road remained closed as the freight train blocked these grade crossings during the investigation until about 2:30 p.m. Lake Villa police, the Canadian National Railway Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office are involved in the investigation.
No Metra alerts were available as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, possibly because the man was struck and killed by a Canadian Northern freight train and no Metra North Central Service trains are scheduled at the Lake Villa Metra station until 5:56 p.m. this evening. Outbound trains are scheduled to arrive tonight at 5:56 p.m., 6:17 p.m., 7:04 p.m., and 7:31 p.m. at the Lake Villa Metra station. The latest train at Lake Villa in the morning departed inbound to Chicago at 7:06 a.m.
