Fireworks at the final day, Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Arlington International Racecourse Arlington Heights, Illinois YouTube Tips ⓘ
If the bidder that succeeds as buyer of Arlington International Racecourse doesn’t have plans to keep the horse racing track, Arlington Park hosted the final races of the almost 100 year-old park on Saturday, September 25, 2021 with a sold-out crowd of 7,500. Arlington’s inaugural race was held on Oct. 13, 1927, won by a 3-year-old horse named Luxembourg.
Arlington’s possible last race at the 94-year-old racetrack was won Saturday at 6:18 p.m. CDT by a 5-year-old mare named Sister Ruler.
The possible sad ending for the racetrack finished with a grandstand fireworks display.
The next steps for Arlington International Racecourse involve closing the barns, which must be vacated by October 5, 2021, and selecting a bidder. The majority of the public claim their favorite bidder is the Chicago Bears, who would leave the City of Chicago and Soldier Field for Arlington Heights where a larger number of fans would have easier access to Bears games. The next favorite bidder is a consortium led by former Arlington Park President Roy Arnold who wants to preserve Arlington Park for horse racing. The next bidders each offer mixed use plans.
Churchill Downs is expected to select a buyer later this Fall.
