Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Kankakee responded about 9:15 a.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021 at the south side entrance of the Kankakee County courthouse near the detention center.
Police on arrival arrested one person who was armed with a weapon. A second person was arrested by Kankakee County sheriff’s deputies while attempting to flee the scene. Witnesses said about 40 rounds were heard, and thought an AK-47 type gun and a 9mm handgun were used.
Kankakee School District 111 was on lockdown immediately after the shooting.
The two people killed in the shooting were men in their 20s. A third male victim was transported to a nearby hospital and was taken into surgery.
“Multiple firearms” were recovered from the scene, including one “long gun,” according to police.
Kankakee is located near I-57 about 60 miles southwest of Chicago. There was no mention of the shooting on the Kankakee Police Department’s official Twitter account several hours after the shooting.
