Police and paramedics from Champaign responded about 11:28 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 2021 responded to a report of a shooting in the block of 100 East Green Street in Champaign. University Police at the University of Illinois initially tweeted the incident defined as a “hazard” at 11:34 p.m.
Police in the area heard the gunshots, and responded to the area. Witnesses at the scene saw the drivers of two vehicles flee eastbound on Green Street and also saw the vehicles travel northbound on 4th Street. Upon arrival, Champaign police officers located a 20-year-old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and began providing medical aid. The victim was transported to a local hospital and taken into surgery in critical condition, according to Champaign Police Department.
Initially there was a report that there were two injured victims. A second shooting victim was not initially confirmed, and it was unknown whether a second victim was shot or injured by another mechanism.
According to the Champaign Police Department, the preliminary investigation indicates there was a gathering of individuals when the victim was shot. Multiple cars at the scene were damaged by gunfire, and police recovered more than 50 casings at the scene.
Champaign Police Department requests that any resident or business agent in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems notify the police department, according to the Champaign Police Department. Captured video images may be of investigative assistance, according to the Champaign Police Department.
No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available, according to the Champaign Police Department. One of suspect vehicles may have been involved in a crash at Broadway Avenue and Main Street in Urbana. Three people fled on foot from the crash scene at that intersection.
Initially, Champaign police did not provide a description of the shooter(s), and did not specify whether there was one shooter or more than one shooter, or whether people may have been shooting at each other.

Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for this crime.
