On Monday, August 9, 2021, a male resident of Wonder Lake was arrested for indecent solicitation of a child.
Aaron C. Cornelius, age 36, of the block of 4200 East Wonder Lake Drive, Wonder Lake, communicated with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl on an electronic social networking application. The “14-year-old girl” was actually an undercover detective.
Cornelius requested to meet the “14-year-old girl” to engage in various sexual acts. He drove to a location in Warren Township on Monday, August 9, 2021, in the evening, to meet with the girl to engage in those acts, but was instead met by Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group (SIG) Detectives.
Cornelius was arrested and transported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges of Indecent Solicitation of a Child and Traveling to Meet a Minor.
Cornelius remains held in the Lake County Jail on $750,000.00 bail. He is next due in court on August 13, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom T020.
“Children are some of our most vulnerable and we work tirelessly to proactively protect them. In the era of technology, I strongly recommend all parents and guardians monitor your children’s electronic use and have serious conversations about the risks of online predators, as online predators are prevalent, and they lurk in the shadows of cyberspace.”
— Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg
Homeland Security Investigations (a SIG member agency) participated in this investigation.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
