On August 19, 2021, sheriff’s detectives were conducting surveillance at a possible drug dealing location, following a resident complaint. While conducting surveillance, they took note of David Uzelac, 27, of the 33600 block of North Evergreen Drive, Gages Lake.
Lake County Sheriff’s detectives surveilled Uzelac and watched him drive from Gages Lake to a monastery in the 35200 block of North Grant Avenue, Third Lake. Uzelac was seen by detectives entering the monastery for a very short amount of time, before returning to his vehicle and again leaving. Sheriff’s detectives became aware Uzelac was not allowed at the monastery, due to previous burglaries he committed at the monastery.
While sheriff’s detectives continued following Uzelac, the sheriff’s patrol deputies assigned to the district where the monastery is located responded to the monastery, to speak with those who oversee the facility. After meeting with the monastery leaders, they were able to determine Uzelac just committed another theft from a donation box inside the monastery, when he quickly went inside.
After confirming the information with the monastery leaders, sheriff’s detectives apprehended Uzelac in the area of Georgetown Lane and Williamsburg Drive, Waukegan. After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, Uzelac was charged with:
Burglary (class 1 felony)
Violation of Bail Bond (class 3 felony)
Theft (class 4 felony)
Criminal Trespass to Building (class B misdemeanor)
Driving While License Revoked (class A misdemeanor)
Uzelac remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court date.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
