Gregory Kelly, age 55 of Palatine was stopped by Des Plaines police near the intersection of Oakton Street and Webster Lane on Friday morning, August 27, 2021 after police were called about 10:49 a.m. to the area to check on a report of an intoxicated subject in the block of 1400 East Oakton Street in Des Plaines. A check by local police discovered that the suspect allegedly had three previous DUI arrests.
Police received a report that an intoxicated unknown male was causing a disturbance and was leaving the area in a white van westbound on Oakton Street from Center Street.
Police upon arrival located the white van and observed the driver make a lane change without a turn signal. Police continued to follow the van as the driver continued westbound Oakton Street and then southbound on Webster Lane. The driver was observed weaving on both sides of the unmarked street.
A traffic stop was conducted in the block of 1800 Webster Lane about one mile from the initial scene and east of Maine West High School where police identified the driver as Gregory Kelly of Palatine. When police asked Kelly for his driver’s license and proof of insurance, he admitted that his driving license was revoked. Police detected a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath, and observed he had watery/bloodshot eyes, a flushed face, and that he was slurring and mumbling his speech.
The officers asked Kelly if he had consumed alcohol prior to driving, and Kelly replied he had consumed alcohol. Police confirmed that Kelly’s driver’s license status was revoked by the Illinois Secretary of State.
Following a field sobriety test and his refusal to take a breathalyzer test, Kelly was taken into custody suspected of DUI. Police also located two bottles of vodka next to the driver’s seat.
Kelly was transported to the Des Plaines Police Station and his vehicle was towed to a police holding area. At the police station he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test and blood sample tests to determine his blood alcohol content.
Des Plaines police discovered that Kelly had three previous DUI arrests, and subsequently The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges for Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. Kelly was also charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Driving on a Revoked License. Kelly was also issued citations for Illegal Transportation of Alcohol, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Improper Lane Change without a Signal, and Improper Traffic Lane Usage.
Gregory Kelly was booked at Cook County Jail Division 15 General Hospital on Sunday, August 29, 2021 where he is being held on $5,000 bond. His next court date is Monday, September 13, 2021 the Cook County Courthouse in Skokie.
