Illinois State Police troopers and Newport Township Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics responded about 6:25 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 2021 to a report that a person was stabbed on I-94 EAST at the 2.25 Mile Marker. Police received a report that a person was down on the right shoulder with a person standing over the victim. Mile Marker 2.25 is just north of Rosecrans Road (Route 173).
The victim and suspect were found by police by about 6:31 p.m. Illinois State Police troopers gave aid to the victim before Newport Township FPD paramedics arrived. The patient, a 24 year-old woman from Clarendon Hills, was transported by Newport Township FPD paramedics to a hospital nearby with a stab wound to the abdomen initially believed to be non-life-threatening. A weapon was found at the scene.
The suspect was immediately placed in custody.
The suspect was identified as Kayln A. Stewart, age 24 of Naperville, and was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery related to an altercation, according to Illinois State Police. Aggravated battery with a weapon is a Class 3 felony, Aggravated Domestic Battery with Great Bodily Harm is a Class 2 felony. Both felonies were approved by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office Felony Review Division.
The Aggravated Battery charged as a Class 3 felony can result in punishment of a 2 to 5 year prison sentence and a fine of up to $25,000.
The Aggravated Domestic Battery charged as a Class 2 felony can result in punishment of 3 to 7 year prison sentence and a fine of up to $25,000.
The victim and suspect were both traveling southbound on I-94 EAST in Newport Township approaching Old Mill Creek and just south of the Illinois-Wisconsin state border when the altercation and stabbing occurred. Wadsworth is also located just east and southeast of the crime scene.
