An Illinois State Police District 15 trooper was on patrol about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021 on I-94 when he discovered (using a speed radar device) a reckless motorist traveling in a blue 2018 Dodge at 140 MPH in Lane 1 of I-94 EAST (southbound) passing Mile Post 14 near Libertyville.
The trooper was able to catch up with the reckless motorist about three miles further down the tollway. When the trooper pulled up behind the speeder with his lights and sirens activated, the dangerous motorist pulled over for the traffic stop.
Inside the blue Dodge, the trooper determined the identity of a 17 year-old driver from Waukegan. The driver was arrested, charged with Aggravated Speeding (Speeding 35+ MPH Over Limit), and later released on a recognizance bond with a scheduled court date. Defendants released on their own recognizance sign a written promise to appear in court as required, but no bail is paid. The 17 year-old driver was also issued a warning for Failure to Signal When Changing Lanes.
The issuance of the recognizance bond may have occurred right at the traffic stop. The dollar amount which is set with issuance of a recognizance bond, also known as an I-Bond, becomes a judgement which can be collected by the court should the defendant fail to appear or comply with any to the conditions of release, according to Ivec Law in Will County. For certain traffic offenses, the motorist’s driver’s license may be posted as bond.
Motorists who travel at 140 MPH are more likely to become involved in a crash, and almost certainly the crash would involve a fatality.
