Fatal crash at Woodfield Road and West Frontage Road near Woodfield Road in Schaumburg YouTube Tips ⓘ
Schaumburg police announced Tuesday, July 20, 2021 that a preliminary investigation of a fatal crash Monday, July 19, 2021 indicates that the driver of a black Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on Woodfield Road disregarded the red traffic control light, and entered into the intersection of Woodfield Road and West Frontage Road just ahead of a black Jeep Cherokee that was driven southbound through the intersection with a green light. Police, firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the call for help at 1:13 p.m., according to the Schaumburg Police Department.
The front-end of the Jeep Cherokee struck the driver’s side of the Ford Mustang. The crash caused severe damage to both vehicles, and the Ford Mustang damage included severed intrusion to the driver’s side where the driver was seated.
Upon arrival of Schaumburg Fire Department paramedics, the driver of the Ford Mustang was determined to be deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford Mustang was identified as Cary Aiello, a 51 year-old male resident of Schaumburg, Illinois.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, a 38 year old male from Bartlett, Illinois, was transported by Schaumburg Fire Department paramedics to AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
There were no passengers; only the drivers were in each vehicle.
The Schaumburg Police Department is continuing this crash investigation with the assistance of the Major Case Assistance Team Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) Team.
Yesterday, preliminary information indicated that police, firefighters, and paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 1:14 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2021 to a report of a crash with injuries and entrapment at Woodfield Road and the West Frontage Road of Route 53 in Schaumburg.
Ambulance 52’s crew on arrival reported two vehicles with heavy damage, and requested an entrapment response. Both vehicles came to rest on West Frontage Road south of Woodfield Road. There was one crash victim in each vehicle. A black Ford Mustang was found with severe damage to the driver’s side door, and a black Jeep Grand Cherokee was found with severe front-end damage. The driver of the Mustang was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was described as “critical.”
The critical patient was transported to a local hospital with a police escort.
MCAT-STAR (Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction) is assisting Schaumburg Police Department with the crash investigation.
The exit ramp from southbound IL-53/I-290 was shut down by the Illinois State Police. All traffic on West Frontage Road from Golf Road was forced to turn right to westbound Woodfield Road. No traffic from East Frontage Road was allowed to turn to westbound Woodfield Road. Traffic on eastbound Woodfield Road was forced to turn right to southbound Martingale Road.
Traffic was diverted from the crash scene during an extended on-scene crash investigation and until firefighters returned to the scene and completed an additional assignment around 6:00 p.m.
