Dereck R. Kelly, a 19-year-old Carpentersville resident who lives in the block of 100 Kings Roads, has been charged with reckless homicide (a Class 3 felony), after he was accused of killing a man in a car crash at Eighth Street and Strom Drive May 8, 2021 in West Dundee.
Kelly was driving on a revoked license at the time of the crash that killed Carl Bley, age 36 of Hoffman Estates. He was also charged with misdemeanor driving on a revoked license.
Kane County prosecutors allege that between 11:30 a.m. and noon May 8, 2021, Kelly was driving a vehicle at a high rate of speed north on South Eighth Street (Route 31) in West Dundee. As he approached the intersection of Strom Drive, driving recklessly with a speed of at least 25 MPH over the posted 35 MPH limit, he struck the vehicle
Bley was driving. Bley died May 9, 2021, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. His obituary states he died Tuesday, May 11, 2021.
Kelly was charged after an investigation by the West Dundee Police Department and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
West Dundee police took Kelly into custody on July 6, 2021. In Kane County bond court, Judge Julia Yetter set Kelly’s bail at $100,000, with 10 percent ($10,000) to apply for bond. He posted bond Wednesday, July 7, 2021, and was released from the Kane County jail. His next court date is 9:00 a.m. July 23, 2021 in Courtroom 319 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Bley worked as an integration technician for computer hardware at Zones, and also performed improvisation comedy weekly at the Bughouse Theater in Chicago. Carl was a graduate of University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
