Police, firefighters and paramedics from Evanston responded about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2021 to a report that a girl was electrocuted while walking on the CTA Purple Line tracks in Evanston south of Isabella Street and north of Central Street in Evanston. On arrival Evanston Police officers found an unresponsive teen girl and attempted to revive her with CPR. Evanston Fire Department paramedics transported a female teen to Level 1 Trauma Center Evanston Hospital where the teen was pronounced dead. The incident occurred just west of Evanston Hospital.
The girl was identified as Samantha Cerrone of Wilmette. Cerrone was a high school student at New Trier High School in Winnetka.
According to Evanston Police Department, Samantha Cerrone of Wilmette and a friend were walking south on the Purple line tracks from about Isabella Street, where the CTA tracks are are not elevated. Samantha apparently tripped or fell onto the electrified rail, which powers the CTA trains.
An investigation is ongoing.
