Severe thunderstorms may arrive near Rockford by 3-6pm, the northwest suburbs by 6-9pm, and northwest Indiana by 6-10pm. Improved timing forecast will be developed once thunderstorms develop in Iowa.
Damaging wind gusts to 60 MPH are the primary threat, but large hail and even a tornado is possible. Northwest Cook County, southern Lake County and southern McHenry County are in the highest risk area for this afternoon and evening, according to a NWS Office Chicago tweet at 6:07 a.m. The NWS declares medium confidence that some areas in Chicagoland will get severe weather. Yesterday, the NWS Chicago forecast placed the highest risk area south of I-88; and today the NWS Storm Prediction Center Day 1 Convective Outlook places the highest risk areas in central and southern Illinois.
CARDINAL NEWS expects the most severe risk will be around I-80 and further south into central and especially southern Illinois.
The high temperature of 74°F will peak at about 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Winds from the southwest will start pickup with gusts of 15 to 21 MPH and higher gusts in thunderstorms.
