Illinois State Police and firefighters and paramedics from Northbrook responded about 10:04 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2021 to a report of a serious crash down an embankment on the Edens Spur near southbound US 41. The crash was initially reported as a crash involving a Honda sedan and a van. The crash was also initially reported incorrectly as a crash in the northbound lanes of the Edens Expressway.
Firefighters on arrival discovered the driver apparently failed to make the curve from the Edens Spur eastbound to the Edens Expressway southbound lanes inbound to Chicago. The wrecked sedan was discovered in a ditch or embankment between the Edens Spur ramp to the southbound Edens Expressway and US-41. Northbrook police officers also responded to the scene. Initially, there was no confirmation whether the driver of the van was involved in the crash.

Firefighter/paramedics worked to remove a person from the crashed vehicle between US-41 and the east to south curve of the Edens Spur. The patient was conscious and was removed from the vehicle by 10:24 p.m. The patient was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Northshore Evanston Hospital.
Illinois State Police suspected there was a second occupant in the vehicle, and firefighters searched the area with an infrared camera, but did not find a second person. Area police departments were alerted to the possibility of the second person, who had walked away from the scene, might be walking in the area.
Traffic on the Edens Spur EAST was shut down at Waukegan Road at about 11:33 p.m. for a short time. Eastbound traffic was diverted to Waukegan Road. However, the closure was only temporary when the Crash Reconstruction investigation was called off.
