Police, firefighters and paramedics from Park Ridge responded about 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2021 to a report of a vehicle fire in the block of 2000 Milton Avenue in Park Ridge. A minute later the fire was reported to have involved a carport attached to the house with the homeowner attempting to extinguish the fire.
The first fire unit on arrival reported heavy fire showing from the carport.
Firefighters and paramedics from Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Morton Grove, Niles, Rosemont, Schiller Park responded to the scene or to stand by at Park Ridge fire stations by 3:14 p.m.
Firefighters on the roof were ordered off the roof for safety due to the spreading fire, and a MABAS Division 1 Box Alarm #36-F1 was requested at 3:22 p.m.
Firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers from Elk Grove Village (unavailable), Glenview, Morton Grove, North Maine, Northbrook, Northfield, and Wheeling were assigned to the fire scene.
A Buffalo Grove ambulance was assigned to stand by in a Park Ridge fire station.
The MABAS Box Alarm was struck out at 4:34 p.m. with all companies working. The fire spread quickly from the carport to the first floor and the second floor. Fire damage may have caused a complete loss of the house.
The homeowner may have been using a propane torch to burn weeds in the yard when the fire ignited the carport and the vehicle that was parked in the carport.
Strong winds fanned the flames and caused a rapid spread of fire. The National Weather Service at O’Hare International Airport reported winds from the Southwest at 15 MPH gusting to 30 MPH at 2:51 p.m.; and from the Southwest at 22 MPH gusting to 37 MPH at 3:51 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
