A Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured when a woman bit him while he was attempting to provide her with paperwork from an earlier incident.
On April 2, 2021, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies on Friday, April 2, 2021 were dispatched to a domestic dispute in progress in the block of 24800 West Oak Avenue, unincorporated Lake Villa. One of the individuals involved, Kayla C. Wood, 24, of the same address was initially taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies for domestic battery and resisting arrest.
After reviewing the facts and circumstances with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, they declined the domestic battery charge at that time. Wood was subsequently transported via ambulance to an area hospital due to some concerning statements she made.
A sheriff’s deputy arrived at the hospital shortly after Wood to provide her with citations for resisting arrest. When the sheriff’s deputy entered Wood’s hospital room, she charged the deputy. The sheriff’s deputy was able to stop Wood and held her back. Wood however slapped the sheriff’s deputy across the face and later bit him. The sheriff’s deputy started placing Wood into handcuffs and she bit the deputy on the arm, causing the skin to break on the deputy’s arm. Wood was then successfully placed into handcuffs.
The sheriff’s deputy was treated at a local hospital and released.
The new information was reviewed with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and they approved the charge of aggravated battery to a peace officer (class 2 felony) for Wood.
On April 3, 2021, Wood was released from the hospital and transported to the Lake County Jail. Wood remains held on the charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer and three counts of resisting arrest, pending an initial court hearing.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
