Illinois State Police troopers, and firefighters and paramedics from Palatine and Arlington Heights responded about 4:28 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021 to a report of a rollover crash with a fire and possible entrapment on the exit ramp from northbound Route 53 to Rand Road near Arlington Heights. The driver got out of the car before firefighters and paramedics arrived. Initially, it was unknown whether a passerby helped rescue the driver, but there was a person in a white Ford Explorer that helped the driver after the crash.
The first fire crew on arrival reported a vehicle on fire. The vehicle — a Toyota RAV4 — was about 15 feet off the left shoulder of the ramp. No extrication was required, and the severely damaged vehicle was upright. The driver was transported by Palatine Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
The off ramp from northbound Route 53 to Rand Road was closed for about 30 minutes during rescue and while firefighters put out the fire.
