The verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial was read at 4:05 at p.m. CT Tuesday, April 20, 2021. The jury was brought back into the court room and the trial was back in session at about 4:05 p.m.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill read the verdict. Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts.
Count 1 Unintentional Second Degree Murder — Guilty
Count 2 3rd Degree murder — Guilty
Count 3 2nd Degree Manslaughter — Guilty
All three verdicts were signed at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2021.
The murder trial began on March 8, 2021 and concluded on April 20, 2021, finding him guilty on all charges. Jurors deliberated for four hours on Monday, April 19, 2021 and resumed deliberating Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. CT (9:00 a.m. ET).
Judge Peter Cahill has served as a judge since 2007 and has also served as chief judge. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill’s career began as a prosecutor in the county public defender’s office in 1984. Judge Cahill worked for 10 years as a prosecutor, and served as top advisor to U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar when she was the Hennepin County state’s attorney.
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in George Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020. Chauvin pleaded not guilty.
