Columbus (Ohio) police released body cam video of a police-involved shooting on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 showing a police call that was dispatched about 4:32 p.m. Tuesday to the block of 3100 Legion Lane in Columbus, where a female teen with a knife was threatening another female teen and was fatally shot by police. Columbus Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said Tuesday night that a caller said that “females were there trying to stab them and put their hands on them.”
Columbus police officers arrived to find a disturbance involving people fighting and kicking. Immediately before the police-involved shooting, a female black wearing a black top and blue pants and appearing to be armed with a knife, charged toward a female black wearing pink clothing. The female wearing blue began to thrust the knife toward the female wearing pink, who was also pinned up against a car and had no escape. Apparently four shots were fired by police, striking the female wearing blue.
The female wearing blue was unresponsive after the shots were fired. Police called medics immediately, assessed the shooting victim, and began CPR with lifesaving measures attempted by at least two police officers at the scene, according to Columbus Interim Police Chief Michael Woods.
Woods said deadly force can be used to protect yourself or a third person, which is part of police policy and “within the law.” Woods said an investigation will seek to determine whether the police involved shooting will comply with police policy.
The female shooting victim has been identified by numerous numerous media sources — citing the girl’s mother (Paula Bryant), the Franklin County Children’s Services (FCCS), and the NAACP — as Ma’Khia Bryant.
