Schaumburg police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 7:08 a.m. Sunday February 21, 2021, to the area of Algonquin Road near Hammond Drive after a Cook County Sheriff’s deputy discovered a head-on crash with three injured victims and two vehicles with severe damage.
Three people were injured in the crash; two crash victims were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, and one crash victim was transported to Northwest Community Hospital.
The initial investigation indicated a white 2014 GMC Sierra, driven by Perla K. Sanchez, age 20 years of the block of 1100 Concord Drive in Elgin, was driving westbound on Algonquin Road. The GMC Sierra pickup truck veered into the eastbound lanes of traffic and struck an oncoming 2011 Mercedes-Benz sedan.
The driver of the Mercedes was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with serious bodily injuries. She was the sole occupant of the Mercedes.
A passenger in the pickup truck was also transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Sanchez was transported to Northwest Community Hospital. Both victims in the GMC Sierra pickup truck were treated and released.
The Schaumburg Police Department investigated the crash with the assistance of the Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (MCAT-STAR) Team.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed all the facts of this case and authorized the following charges:
Aggravated Reckless Driving,
Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol,
Illegal Transportation of Alcohol,
Minor Consumption of Alcohol,
Speeding, and
Improper Lane Usage.
The suspect, Perla K. Sanchez turned herself in at the Schaumburg Police Department where she was arrested and charged. Sanchez appeared for a bond hearing at the 3rd District Cook County Court in Rolling Meadows on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 where a bond of $30,000 was set.
