Airline and business groups are asking the Biden administration to develop temporary COVID-19 status credentials that would let travelers show they have been tested and/or vaccinated for COVID-19. Airline industry authorities say the measure will help revive travel and hospitality spending during the attempt to recover from the Coronavirus pandemic.
China and other countries are establishing “Vaccine Passports” but experts are pushing for a universal standard instead of a variety of regional credentials.
So far vaccination has not been planned to be a requirement for domestic or international travel, but proof of vaccination may be connected to digital vaccine certificates carried on smartphones.
The World Health Organization and the United Nations’ aviation arm are working on specific information to include in a vaccine credential. The airline industry is pushing for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to take a leading role as authority for the credentials.
“QR health codes” on WeChat and other Chinese smartphone apps are already established to allow entry to domestic transport and many public areas in China. The WeChat certificate was launched Monday, march 8, 2021. The Chinese certificate is also available in paper form.
