Illinois State Police Seek Public’s Help Identifying Vehicle and Suspect Involved in Shots Fired into Honda Civic

Illinois State Police (ISP) officials are investigating a shooting which occurred on Sunday, Mar. 28, 2021, at approximately 11:51 a.m. on Interstate 94 eastbound at milepost 23 (between Duffy Lane and Deerfield Road) in Lake County.

ISP District 15 officers responded to I-94 EAST just south of Duffy Lane to a report of a hit-and-crash and interstate shooting. Upon arrival, ISP District 15 officers learned the driver of the victim vehicle — a 65-year-old male of Ingleside in Lake County, Illinois — was traveling on Interstate 94 EAST (southbound) at milepost 23 (west of Deerfield Road) when the victim vehicle was involved in a property damage crash with an unknown vehicle. The front end of the offender’s vehicle struck the rear end of the victim’s vehicle. The driver of the offending vehicle began shooting at the victim’s vehicle after the crash. The driver of the victim vehicle did not report any injuries from gunfire.

Illinois State Police and Deerfield-Bannockburn firefighters and paramedics responded about 11:51 a.m. Sunday, March 28, 2021 to the report of a hit-and-run crash with shots fired on I-94 East (southbound) near the 23 Mile Marker (near Riverwoods to the west and Bannockburn to the east). The victim wasn’t sure, but he didn’t think he was shot, but thought he may have been injured by glass when the windshield was hit by gunfire.

Illinois State Police investigated on-scene on the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) for about three hours after the victim driving a white Honda Civic was rear-ended by the driver of a vehicle that may have been a blue Chevy. The shooter fired at least three shots into the white Honda Civic, which was found with two bullet holes on the passenger side and one bullet hole in the windshield.

The offender driving the blue Chevy was initially only described as a male black subject.

ALL LANES were shut down on I-94 EAST in the area
At approximately 12:15 p.m., all eastbound (southbound) lanes from Half Day Road to milepost 23 (west or north of Deerfield Road) were closed for the investigation. Immediately after the crash and shooting some of the I-94 EAST lanes remained open. At approximately 3:10 p.m., all lanes were opened.

I-94 WEST (northbound) was open in the area as of 1:09 p.m. and apparently did not close at any time Sunday, March 28, 2021.

The events surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
