Police-Involved Shooting: Victim Pointed Gun at Police
Grayslake Police Officers on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at about 11:50 p.m., were dispatched to a residence in the block of 1600 Fairport Drive, Grayslake to a report of a person threatening suicide. The person threatening suicide was a 28-year-old man of unincorporated Round Lake. The caller was the mother of the man, who was not on scene, but had received a call from the man.
Grayslake Police Officers arrived on scene and attempted to speak with the man. As two officers approached the front door, the man exited the home and was armed with a pistol. The man pointed the pistol at the officers, and one of the officers discharged his firearm at the man. The man was struck and wounded. Grayslake police officers immediately rendered aid to the man until paramedics arrived on the scene, according to to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The paramedics were already staging nearby, due to the nature of the call. The man was transported to an area hospital where he remains in serious, but stable condition.
Investigators determined the object pointed at Grayslake Officers was a replica semi-automatic pistol with a black and silver finish. There were no markings on the firearm to indicate it was not real, according to police.
An extended relative of the male gunshot victim owns the home on Fairport Drive near Crisfield Drive in a neighborhood of single-family homes, just west of the Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve.
Grayslake Police requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to respond to the scene in order to follow Illinois State Law and department policy following a police officer-involved shooting. The purpose of the Task Force response is to conduct an independent investigation. The results of the investigation and evidence obtained during the investigation will be turned over to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office for analysis.
