Lake County Sheriff’s deputies, and firefighters and paramedics from Gurnee responded about 9:33 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2021 to a report of a crash with injuries about 20 to 50 feet into a marshy area off of Stearns School Road east of Route 45 in Warren Township.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived first, and discovered a vehicle with heavy damage, and two crash victims that were unresponsive.
The single-vehicle crash involved a vehicle hitting a guard rail and launching into the marsh, but not submerged. Gurnee firefighters and paramedics immediately went to work with two crash victims requiring extrication. One of the victims was partially ejected from the vehicle. Both patients, suffering life-threatening injuries, were extricated by 9:46 p.m.
The driver and the passenger were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased.
Preliminary investigation shows a 2009 Audi TTS, driven by a 23-year-old man of Waukegan, was traveling westbound on Stearns School Road at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail on the north side of the roadway. A passenger in the vehicle, a 23-year-old man of Hainesville, was not wearing his seat belt and was partially ejected. Both the driver and the passenger sustained major injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
