According to Wheeling Community Consolidated School District 21 (CCSD21), on Thursday, March 25, 2021, CCSD21 was informed by the Vernon Hills Police Department that former Cooper Middle School teacher Ilan Gibori was taken into custody after being charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual assault. CCSD21 serves students in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, and Wheeling. Cooper Middle School is located at 1050 Plum Grove Circle in Buffalo Grove.
On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, the Vernon Hills Police Department received information from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) that Ilan Gibori had sexually assaulted a minor victim on numerous occasions over a period of several years.
Ilan Paul Gibori (Ilan P. Gibori) was arrested on Thursday, March 25, 2021 and was initially in custody at the Tarrant County Jail in Texas. He is being held without bond as a fugitive, according to Tarrant County jail records. He is held without bond and is awaiting extradition. Dallas-Fort Worth Airport is located in the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, and Dallas and Tarrant counties as part of the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan statistical area.
During the last year of Gibori’s employment with CCSD21 (during the 2018-2019 school year), he was a sixth grade teacher at Cooper Middle School. A preliminary investigation determined Gibori met the victim while he was a teacher at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove in 2017. Ilan Gibori’s Linkedin profile reports that he worked for CCSD21 from August 2002 until July 2019 (17 years).
Ilan Gibori left CCSD21 in July 2019 to pursue a different career opportunity, according to CCSD21. The apparent Linkedin account for Ilan Gibori lists that he has been the Center Director at The House Tutoring Lounge in Glencoe since July 2019. Vernon Police Department also confirmed that Ilan Gibori as worked at The House Tutoring Lounge in Glencoe.
The House Tutoring Lounge “The House” is described as a tutoring and test prep service company. Photos on the website show colorful and cozy learning spaces. According to the official website, “The House® is staffed by award-winning tutors that offer private tutoring in-person, online, inside The House, or in your home.” Besides Academic Tutoring and Test Prep, the facility provides Study Groups and custom PODS that include groups of 2-4 students customized learning that meet in two-hour increments.
Education listings for Ilan Gibori include National Louis University (Bachelor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction) and Concordia University (Master of Education in Educational Leadership and General Administration). He apparently has two profiles on Linkedin.
On ratemyteachers.com Ilan Gibori only had four ratings. 1 Star ratings were in the “Helpful” and “Textbook Use” category using a 5-Star scale. Gibori also received multiple 5-Star ratings for being “Helpful”.
According to Vernon Hills Police Department, Ilan Gibori is 46 years-old and a Vernon Hills resident who lives in the block of 800 Belle Isle Lane.
A Twitter account with the name Ilan Gibori has a Jester as a profile picture. The Twitter account includes photos that resemble the suspect. The account retweets anti-Trump messages and follows several liberal or progressive politicians, including former Minnesota Senator Al Franken and former President Bill Clinton — both associated with sexual assault or sexual misconduct allegations. The account also contained a tweet about “Students connecting social injustices and civil unrest,” and included a retweet of a message that stated, “Students buy into the teacher before they buy into the learning.”
Law enforcement urges that if any member of the community has additional information to report about the Ilan Gibori case, they are asked to contact the Vernon Hills Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 847-247-4891 or the Buffalo Grove Police Department at 847-459-2560.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
