Sixth Arrest for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Since 2007
Palatine Police on Monday, March 15, 2021 arrested 38-year-old Andres C. Chavez of the block of 500 North Quentin Road in Palatine, and charged him with one felony count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, one misdemeanor count of driving on a revoked driver’s license, and one misdemeanor count of hit and run.
Palatine police responded about 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2021 to a report that the driver of a vehicle struck a fire hydrant and fled the scene in the block of 200 North Smith Street. Upon arrival, multiple witnesses told police that a green sport utility vehicle struck the hydrant. Witnesses were able to give officers the Illinois license plate information for the suspect’s vehicle, and a description of the driver.
Shortly thereafter, the investigating officer responded to the address associated with the suspect’s vehicle registration. While attempting to locate the vehicle, the officer discovered a green GMC Yukon bearing the Illinois registration given by witnesses at the scene. This vehicle was being driven on Quentin Road by a suspect matching the description of the driver. The Palatine police officer stopped the vehicle and observed the driver to be exhibiting signs of being under the influence of alcohol. The officer also observed damage on the vehicle consistent with the evidence and statements at the scene of the crash with the fire hydrant.
The driver of the vehicle was identified by the officer as Andres C. Chavez. After submitting to field sobriety tests, the officer arrested Chavez for driving under the influence of alcohol. With Chavez in custody, the officer conducted a background check of Chavez’s license and learned this was his sixth arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol since 2007.
Chavez refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. The officer advised the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office of this incident, and they approved one felony count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. This is a class X felony, and carries with it a minimum of 6 years of imprisonment.
Palatine Police transported Chavez to the Cook County 3rd District Court House located 2121 West Euclid Avenue, Rolling Meadows for a bond hearing on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. At court Chavez appeared before Judge Ellen Beth Mandeltort, who ordered a $100,000.00 “D” bond with his next appearance being on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. in room #108. Chavez remained in custody at the Cook County Jail on Wednesday evening March 17, 2021.
