Hoffman Estates police were on the scene where a minor two-vehicle property damage-only crash had occurred at the intersection of Beverly Road and Higgins Road about 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2021 when a second fatal incident occurred. While police were investigating the property damage-only crash, a male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle nearby.
The man, age 52 of Carpentersville, was not involved with the prior crash. He began crossing Higgins Road about 6:37 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Higgins Road.
The man was unresponsive and barely breathing immediately after he was struck. Police at the prior crash scene immediately helped the man, and called for Hoffman Estates Fire Department paramedics to respond to the scene.
The man, identified as Peter Khokar, was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead.
The collision remains under investigation by the Hoffman Estates Police Traffic Division and the Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team (MCAT-STAR).
The area near the crash scene is not pedestrian-friendly — where Higgins Road is a high-speed divided highway (55 MPH Speed Limit) and there are no sidewalks along Higgins Road or Beverly Road (40 MPH Speed Limit).
Weather conditions were reported to include light snow, fog and mist with an Air Temperature of 34°F at 6:51 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2021, according to the National Weather Service Office at O’Hare International Airport. Winds were from the South 17 MPH and gusting to 28 MPH. Off-road areas were also covered by deep snow cover at least 12 inches.
