On Thursday, February 25, 2021 at approximately 5:50 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were on the scene of a traffic crash in the 38300 block of North Sheridan Road, Beach Park. While investigating the traffic crash, the adult children of one of the driver’s arrived at the scene. They had not been involved in the crash. One of those children, Akilra J. Tolbert, 38, of the 1400 block of Lorelei Drive, Zion, began yelling at the driver who was involved in the crash with his mother.

The sheriff’s deputy investigating the crash intervened as Tolbert was acting in an irate manner. While attempting to separate Tolbert from the driver of the crash, Tolbert struck the sheriff’s deputy. Additional sheriff’s deputies arrived and attempted to take Tolbert into custody. Tolbert began physically fighting with the sheriff’s deputies. After a brief struggle, sheriff’s deputies were subsequently able to take Tolbert into custody.

The sheriff’s deputies sustained minor cuts during the struggle and bruises and Tolbert sustained minor abrasions.

After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges:

Two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer (class 3 felonies)

Two counts of resisting a peace officer causing injury (class 4 felonies)

Disorderly conduct (class C misdemeanor)

Tolbert remains held in the Lake County Jail on $25,000.00 bail. He is next due in court on March 2, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom T020.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
