Fort Worth area police, firefighters and paramedics responded to calls for help that began about 6:00 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2021 when a multi-vehicle pileup crash occurred on I-35 between Northside Drive/Yucca Avenue and Watauga Road in Fort Worth. Many of the vehicles were located on I-35 near the Mercy Culture Church and just north of the West Fork Trinity River.
The stretch of I-35 where the crashes occurred was downhill approaching the West Fork Trinity River and inbound to downtown Fort Worth. The Express Lanes where the pileup crash occurred is posted with a Speed Limit of 75 MPH.
Five people are reported killed in the crash as of late Thursday afternoon. At least 36 victims were transported to local hospitals. Four police officers were injured — some while they were on their way to work.
About 133 vehicles were involved in the pileup crash with ice as a factor.
Police and firefighter rescuers were on scene by about 6:13 a.m.
There was fog, mist and drizzle overnight from about 1:45 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. Thursday. Around the time of the crash, the National Weather Service at Fort Worth, Meacham International Airport hourly report at 5:53 a.m. published an Air Temperature of 23°F, a Dew Point of 21°F, a Wind Chill of 10°F with winds from the North at 18 MPH and gusting to 25 MPH. Relative Humidity was 92%.
