A light dusting of snow overnight is forecast overnight Sunday to Monday. The significant snow is forecast to begin about 3:00 p.m. after some flakes appear about 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2021. Heavy snow Monday evening with rates of one inch per hour or more will occur from I-80 north to about the middle of Lake County and southeast McHenry County. Wind gusts of around 35 mph are expected to peak from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Total snow amounts at the end of the intense snow period Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. are forecast to be 5 to 8 inches in a band that centers around Arlington Heights and other northwest suburbs. An additional 0.5 inch of snow is forecast for the period from noon to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Possibly the onset of snow could be delayed if a trend of a dryer air persists Monday.
Snow composition forecast to be on the wet side for good snowballs and snowman building. Icing is forecast along and south of I-80, and is not forecast for the northwest suburbs.
Snowfall rates will make traveling hazardous with very low visibility at times.
Fortunately, a severe cold period is not forecast following the snowfall.
Weather Radar in northeast Illinois is clear.
