The Winter Storm for January 25-26, 2021 began with graupel at about 4:40 p.m. in Arlington Heights. Wet snow and heavy snow (snow water ratio 10:1) will fall from 6:00 p.m. Monday until about 3:00 a.m. Tuesday at a rate of .75 to 1.0 inch per hour.
Snow Water Ratio
10:1 is average wet snow, which amounts to 10 inches of snow for 1 inch of water. Snow Water Ratio 5:1 is much wetter snow. Snow Water Ratio 20:1 to 30:1 ratio is much dryer snow that occurs in snow that falls in the teens and single digits.
Snow cover over the wet snow will be dryer and fluffier about dawn and during the day on Tuesday when snowfall rates will be about 0.3 to 0.5 inches per hour. Significant tapering off of snowfall will begin about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, but snow flurries will continue all the way to about 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. No freezing rain or sleet is expected with this storm near Arlington Heights.
Wind gusts from the northwest will peak between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. from 34-35 MPH, and will continue in excess of 25 MPH until about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. Winds will shift from the north about 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and continue through Wednesday.
