A blizzard dumped over 20 inches of snow in Madrid and other regions of Spain on Saturday, January 9, 2021 killing at least four people and leaving thousands trapped in cars, and stranded at train stations and airports where all services were suspended.

In Madrid, authorities activated a red alert for the first time since the system was established four decades ago. The military in Spain was assigned to rescue people from vehicles trapped on small roads and major thoroughfares.
The bodies of a man and woman were recovered near the town of Fuengirola by the Andalucía region emergency service after their car was washed away by a flooded river.
A 54-year-old man was also found dead in Madrid under a large pile of snow, according to The Interior Ministry.
A homeless man died of hypothermia in the northern city of Zaragoza.
More than half of Spain’s provinces remained under severe weather alerts for Storm Filomena.
