The shooting victim’s identity was released Friday, January 1, 2021 as Christina Czuj, age 54, of Sleepy Hollow. Illinois State Police took control of the criminal investigation. A location, indicated as part of the investigation, is an exit ramp from I-90 West to Barrington Road. Initially unknown to media was whether any tollway cameras on I-90 detected information that contributed evidence to the investigation. The Illinois State Police have identified a suspect, but did not initially release the identity of the suspect, or confirm whether the suspect was in custody. The Illinois State Police did not indicate the relationship of the suspect with Christina Czuj, who recently celebrated a birthday in December 2020.

Multiple police agencies and firefighters and paramedics from Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District responded about 1:15 a.m. Friday, January 1, 2021 to a report that a female passenger was shot at Palatine Road and Barrington Road near Inverness and Barrington Township.




A male called 9-1-1 saying he had an argument with a 54 year-old female passenger in a silver Chevy Silverado pickup truck and that a female passenger was shot twice.

Police arrived within about five minutes and determined the scene was secure. Firefighters and paramedics from Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District confirmed a person dead at the scene. The Chevrolet Silverado was facing westbound on Palatine Road near the shoulder.

Police officers and/or state troopers from Barrington Hills, Hoffman Estates, the Illinois State Police, and Inverness were immediately at the scene.

Initially there was no confirmation whether the actual shooting occurred in the proximity of the location where the Chevy Silverado was stopped. An on-scene investigation continued from the time of the report of the shooting at 1:15 a.m. beyond 8:15 a.m.

Crews from Hanover Township Emergency Services assisted with traffic control in the area.




Roads were blocked in the area while the on-scene investigation was underway. Westbound Palatine Road was blocked at New Abbey Drive across from Ridgeview Drive. Eastbound Palatine Road was blocked at Algonquin Road. Northbound Barrington Road was blocked at Ridgeview Drive. Southbound Barrington Road was blocked at Abbey Woods Lane.

The crime scene is located near the border of Inverness, Barrington Hills and Barrington Township, and is east of the Crabtree Nature Center Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
