Hundreds of people crowded into a hotel ballroom on Wednesday, toasting newlyweds. But in the middle of a pandemic, how is that allowed? CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reports.
What appeared to be a large wedding with hundreds of people in attendance was allowed to occur at the Hilton Chicago Northbrook Hotel, 2855 Milwaukee Avenue Northbrook, Illinois on Wednesday night, December 2, 2020. Witnesses report that according to observations of attire worn and other other observations, there appeared to be “Orthodox Jews” in attendance and/or officiating the wedding.
Personnel of the hotel during the wedding reception would not answer CBS Chicago reporter Charlie DeMar’s question regarding why the group gathering was allowed. A receptionist initially stated a manager would be arriving from another hotel to explain. The manager never arrived. A hotel engineer arrived at the lobby, but quickly left the scene.
With the statewide positivity rate at record highs this Fall 2020, and hospitalizations already having surpassed the Spring 2020 peak, all eleven state IDPH regions moved into Tier 3 mitigations effective Friday, November 20, 2020 at 12:01 a.m. The activated Tier 3 mitigation requirements are intended to combat the surge of COVID-19 cases across Illinois and prevent the overwhelming of hospital facilities, resources, and health care personnel. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 reported a single-day record high Coronavirus COVID-19 of 238 deaths — earlier on the same day as the wedding. The 238 deaths and 9,757 new cases were reported with data that was delayed from the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Video captured following the wedding reception, showed the couple, including the bride with long, blond hair, departing in a white 4-door Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. This model Roll-Royce was manufactured from April 1955 to March 1966, and it was unknown whether the vehicle was a rental with a chauffeur or friend or family member’s vehicle. No one at the wedding at the late overnight scene would provide an interview.
An unidentified person at the wedding event made disparaging remarks toward Charlie DeMar, and asserted himself that if Charlie DeMar mentions Orthodox Jews in his report, he can go ‘f’ himself.
Today we wait to find out whether Gov. J.B Pritzker mentions the wedding or an investigation of the gathering – a potential COVID-19 Super Spreader event — at his daily presser on Thursday, December 3, 2020.
It was initially unknown how CBS Chicago became aware of the event.
