Chicago Police Looking for a Dark Chevy Malibu (2009-2012) with Front-End Damage
A child and an adult were seriously injured as pedestrians in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in Gage Park. There may have been two incidents that are connected in some way.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded just before 8:07 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2020 to a report of two pedestrians hit by a vehicle near 55th Street and Troy Street. Initially only one person had been reported hit. Upon arrival firefighters confirmed two people were hit in the block of 3100 West 55th Street.
At least one of the victims was trapped under a vehicle, and the fire department called for a “pin-in response” to extricate a victim from under a vehicle. Both patients were transported away from the scene by 8:33 p.m. to different hospitals. An adult female, age 48, was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center University of Chicago Medicine where she was pronounced dead, and a male child was transported to the Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center at Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as Araceli Gutierrez and Giovanne Bucio.
The case is described as a hit-and-run, but the suspect’s vehicle information was not initially available. Overnight police identified the vehicle as a Chevy Malibu. Initially there was no explanation regarding how a victim was trapped under a vehicle considering the offending driver fled with their vehicle. CTA Bus 55 Garfield appeared to be parked at the crime scene.
Chicago police have alerted the public to help locate or provide information about a dark colored Chevy Malibu, believed to be a 2009 to 2012 model based on body styles.
Police believe the vehicle has front-end damage near the driver’s side headlight area.
There had also been another crash in the area, but details of that crash were not initially available. WGN’s Patrick Elwood reported that he observed several security cameras in positions near the scene.
The scenario initially was confusing, but police have stated that a narrative is forthcoming. The Chicago Police Department Major Accident Investigation Unit is on the scene.
Any citizens with information about this incident are urged to contact Chicago police by leaving an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com.
