Police and firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 3:06 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 2020 to an activated fire alarm at the Christian Church of Arlington Heights, 333 West Thomas Street in Arlington Heights.
On arrival, the first fire crew discovered fire on the first floor of a 1-story wing of the church on the east side of the building. The fire department response was upgraded to a Working Fire “Code 4“ response. Firefighters immediately had two hose lines on the fire from the exterior though windows and a door on the east side.
Firefighters knocked down the fire on the first floor but they discovered brown smoke still coming from the roof in other parts of the church. The fire extended toward the sanctuary at the northeast corner of the church.
Initially firefighters used ground ladders and brought saws to the roof, and then began to cut holes in the roof to check for fire in the roof … and to ventilate. Firefighters then raised the main aerial ladder from Tower 1 on the east side of the building on Chestnut Avenue.
The roof over the sanctuary was very steep and one firefighter slipped, but was caught by another two firefighters. Initially there were no injuries reported. At 4:05 p.m. the fire seemed to be under control.
Firefighters from Mount Prospect, Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows responded to assignments at the fire scene — working with Arlington Heights firefighters.
