Police and firefighter/paramedics from Fox River Grove responded about 11:20 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2020 to a report of a car crash in the BMO Harris Bank, 860 Northwest Highway.
On arrival, police and firefighter/paramedics discovered a white 2019 Buick Regal wagon that had crashed through a brick wall and almost entirely inside the bank building. Initially, no injuries were reported, but the driver was entrapped. Firefighters extricated the driver and assessed for injuries. The driver refused transportation to a nearby hospital. Five employees inside the bank were not injured.
The cause of the crash was initially unknown.
Apparently a yellow bollard post installed at the front of the bank failed to stop the vehicle. The bollard appeared to be improperly installed with not enough of the post below ground. From photos available at the scene, it appears that the bollard post was installed less than one foot underground, and may not have had a concrete foundation surrounding the bollard post. Proper installation depends on the speed and mass of vehicles that the bollard post is designed to protect, but is usually recommended from 18 to 36 inches. Deeper posts protect buildings, gas meters, etc. from heavier vehicles traveling at higher speeds. A foundation helps prevent the post from breaking underground, and are recommended to be a minimum of 18 inches by 18 inches square for the full depth of the bollard post.
Initially it is unknown if Fox River Grove building inspectors assess the proper installation of bollards or whether any building code specifies the proper installation of bollard posts.
Nicor also responded to the scene to make sure there was no gas leak and that no gas lines or meters were damaged.
The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
