Crystal Lake police responded about 1:10 a.m. Sunday, November 1, 2020 to the Marathon gas station at 770 South Virginia Road in Crystal Lake.
The suspect was described as a male/white, age 55, about 5’9” with a medium build, wearing a yellow and brown ski cap and a large yellow jacket, and armed with a bowie knife.
Crystal Lake Police Department said the suspect placed the knife “near the clerk’s neck” while threatening the clerk and demanding cash. The suspect forcefully removed the cash drawer and fled on foot in an unknown direction.
Later on Sunday, police received a call from the gas station that the clerk recognized a customer in the gas station C-Store or Convenience Store building, who was believed to be the same person involved in the robbery around 1:00 a.m. When police arrived at the gas station, the suspect fled, but police apprehended him and identified him as Dieter M. Bierwith. Crystal Lake Police Department detectives were able to determine that Bierwith had been involved in the earlier robbery, according to Crystal Lake Police Department.
Dieter M. Bierwith is charged with armed robbery, commercial burglary, theft and possession of a controlled substance. Dieter M. Bierwith was being held at the McHenry County jail awaiting a bond hearing.
