Police and firefighters and paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 11:44 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2020 to a report of black smoke showing from the roof of IKEA at 1800 McConnor Parkway.
Firefighters on arrival reported smoke showing from the rear of the building. Firefighters raised to aerials to the roof and had water flowing from aerial streams. Truck 51’s crew was on the roof. Firefighters also brought apartment pack hose lines interior to the third floor.
The fire call was upgraded to a working fire by 11:58 a.m. Firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights, Bloomingdale, Rolling Meadows, Roselle and Wood Dale responded to Schaumburg to stand by or respond to other emergency calls in Schaumburg.
The fire was declared knocked by 12:10 p.m. Firefighters were checking for hot spots and working to prevent water damage. There was no fire damage inside the building, there was possibly no smoke inside the building. However, roof material had significant damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire was possibly related to one or more solar panels that area installed in an array on the roof of IKEA. The array of solar panels on top of the Schaumburg IKEA building is among the largest rooftop arrays in Illinois.
