According to the Waukegan Police Department, a Waukegan police officer shot two people Tuesday night October 20, 2020 around midnight after the driver of a car allegedly put the car in reverse and allegedly aimed the car toward the officer. One person died, described as a “male Black in his late teens from Waukegan,” according to a police statement. He was a passenger, and his name was not initially released. The driver, a female in her 20s, was shot an wounded during the incident.
The incident began shortly before midnight on Tuesday night when an officer began to investigate a vehicle near Liberty Street and Oak Street. The car then drove off from the officer.
Moments later, another officer spotted the car near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and South Avenue, according to Waukegan Police Department. As the second officer walked toward the vehicle, the driver put the car in reverse. Waukegan police said the police officer fired his pistol out of “fear for his safety.” No weapon was found in the vehicle, according to Waukegan Police Department.
The driver, a Waukegan woman in her 20s, and the teenage passenger were both hit by gunfire, police said. The female driver was hospitalized and listed in serious condition. She is expected to recover. The passenger was transported by Waukegan Fire Department paramedics to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Body camera and squad car video was turned over to the Illinois State Police, who are investigating the incident. State police will then present its findings to the Lake County state’s attorney’s office.
Both police officers involved in the incident have five years of experience each with the Waukegan Police Department.
