Police and firefighter/paramedics from Libertyville responded about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, October 4, 2020 to a report of a bicyclist hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Route 176 and Stritch Drive. The crash was located just east of Stritch Drive and west of Woodland Road.
Police and paramedics upon arrival discovered a male bicyclist down on the roadway, but conscious and alert. Libertyville firefighter/paramedics treated the man at the scene, and transported him to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Libertyville Police Department.
Police also met with the driver of the vehicle at the scene.
According to an anonymous source, the bicyclist also suffered a gunshot wound. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2020.
The crash is under investigation by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, the Libertyville Police Department, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Speed Limit changes from 35 MPH to 40 MPH on Route 176 just west of Stritch Drive, according to a Google Maps Street View captured October 2019. That is, Route 176 is 40 MPH east of Stritch Drive and 35 MPH west of Stritch Drive.
The North Shore Bike Path runs parallel just south of Route 176, where Maple Avenue becomes Park Avenue heading eastbound. The stretch of Route 176 is a dark 2-lane highway at night.
The crash was also located near the University of Saint Mary of the Lake — Mundelein Seminary and Cardinal Stritch Retreat to the north of Route 176, and Carmel Catholic High School to the south of Route 176.
The identity of the man was initially withheld pending notification of family member.
