Ohio State University Drum Major John LaVange dips a little lower than usual for his last backbend in Ohio Stadium on November 18, 2017.

The ramp entrance of the Ohio State University Marching Band is an exciting time at a Big Ten college pre-game with a performance in front of a huge cheering crowd. On this day, Saturday November 18, 2017, Ohio State University played Illinois at home. This was also the day of the last performance by spectacular Drum Major John LaVange.

The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Fighting Illini 52 to 14 and clinched the Big Ten East title on this day.

John LaVange is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Max. M. Fisher College of Business. LaVange graduated with a specialization in finance and minor in economics, as well as Latin Honors of Summa Cum Laude. During his time at OSU, he says he was fortunate enough to be a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band, Delta Sigma Pi Professional Fraternity, Buckeye Capital Investors, and Fisher’s Undergraduate Business Council.

In his post university life he is working in finance in the Columbus, Ohio area, and hopes to do “something in the political landscape.”

Ohio State Marching Band GoPro Experience

Video of Ryan Dunson marching in the I-6 position with The Ohio State University Marching Band on October 6th, 2018 against Indiana University. Since Ryan is the assistant squad leader, he normally leads out the band in the I-1 position. However, this time the head squad leader and Ryan decided to switch positions. This is a true representation of what it is like to be on the field for the ramp entrance, and the incomparable Script Ohio. Ryan Dunson gave a special thank you to Emily Dean and the Big Ten Network for allowing me to use their GoPro.

“This is America in a nutshell , spectacular , showy , full of life and ever so slightly ridiculous.”

“A perfectionist practices until they get it right. A professional practices until they cannot get it wrong.”

John LaVange arguably is the best drum major in the history of OSU Marching Band. Way to go, John! What a performance!

Damn… I’m a Wolverine… yet even I have to admit that’s good stuff… ;)

I remember when marching bands like this were the half-time entertainment at the Super Bowl.

Six candidates tried out for the coveted positions of Head and Assistant Drum Major for The Ohio State University Marching Band. Each candidate goes through three sections of tryouts.

Game day hype builds to one big moment for Ohio State’s 60th drum major, Nathan MacMaster. Standing at the top of a long, dark ramp, listening to the roar of 100,000-plus fans – he focuses on the job ahead and relies on the decades of tradition behind him.
