Illinois State Police and firefighter/paramedics from Newport Township Fire Protection District responded about 8:54 p.m. Saturday October 17, 2020 on eastbound Interstate 94 near Russell Road near Wadsworth, Illinois.
Illinois State Police troopers on arrival discovered a rolled over semi-trailer truck blocking all lanes of I-94. The truck rolled on the driver’s side but the driver was not trapped.
After the single-vehicle crash, motorists in traffic were attempting to exit on the Frontage Road entrance ramp near Edwards Road.
The truck driver did not initially report any injuries, or had minor injuries.
The semi-trailer truck was entering eastbound I-94 on the ramp from Edwards Road, and as the semi-trailer truck entered the eastbound lanes of I-94, the entire truck and trailer rolled onto the driver’s side.
High winds were believed to be a factor in the single-vehicle truck rollover crash. According to the National Weather Service observations at Waukegan National Airport, winds were from the south about 17-24 MPH with gusts from 32-38 MPH. The highest wind speed was recorded at 33 MPH (time no released) and the highest wind gust was 47 MPH (time not released). Near the point where the Frontage Road ramp meets I-94 East, the tollway is heading west-southwest, allowing southerly crosswinds to hit the truck from the south.
Ernie’s Towing worked the recovery and removal of the semi-trailer truck.
