Gurnee police announced Thursday, October 15, 2020 that they have arrested two juveniles a little over a week apart in connection with a shooting on October 5, 2020 when a 20 year-old male was discovered with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Gurnee responded about 5:50 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2020 to a report of a gunshot victim in the area of Dilleys Road and Nations Drive in the central area of Gurnee and a few blocks north of Six Flags Great America (mentioned for location reference only). Gurnee police officers immediately located a juvenile male with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The Gurnee police investigation revealed the victim had a pre-arranged meeting with acquaintances in a parking lot near the intersection of Stearns School Road and Dilleys Road, less than a mile north of the address where the victim was located. An altercation erupted, and the acquaintances fired shots at the victim, striking him in the leg. The victim drove a few blocks away from the scene before calling the police for assistance at Dilleys Road and Nations Drive. The shooting occurred near a residential neighborhood. The victim was found in a commercial, retail area of Gurnee. Nations Drive is west of the Dilleys Road intersection and Pinewood Road is east of the intersection.

All suspects accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Gurnee police detectives discovered the shooting was a result of a narcotics transaction. One male suspect, a 16-year-old from Gurnee, Illinois, was taken into custody on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, for his alleged involvement in the shooting.

The progression of the investigation led detectives to a second male suspect, a 15-year-old from Grayslake, IL. After clarifying the suspect’s involvement in the case, the second juvenile was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Detectives recovered a handgun with an extended magazine during the investigation.

“Safety has always been a priority in our community, and we take violent crimes seriously. We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of our investigators, along with the initiative of our community members to come forward with crucial information. The partnership our department has with the community is undeniable and ultimately aids us in solving cases.”

— Gurnee Police Chief Brian Smith

Charges for the two male juveniles involved in this case are being pursued through the juvenile court system.

The shooting victim’s injuries suffered on October 5, 2020 were not initially considered life-threatening. The Gurnee Fire Department provided emergency medical treatment and transported the victim to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
