Police and firefighter/paramedics from Wauconda responded about 12:43 p.m. Thursday, October 8, 2020 to a report of a bicyclist hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Route 176 and Brown Street in southwest Wauconda.
On arrival police discovered at crash involving a black 4-door Infiniti and a motorized bicycle.
The driver of the motorized bicycle, identified as David Carbajal, 57, of Wauconda, was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was listed in critical condition. The driver of the Infiniti did not initially report any injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of the motorized bicycle was traveling westbound on the north sidewalk of Route 176, and approached the intersection of Brown Street. According to witnesses, and for reasons unknown at this time, the driver of the motorized bicycle suddenly attempted to turn right to travel north on Brown Street. The driver of the motorized bicycle turned too wide and collided into the Infiniti which was stopped southbound at the red light. The driver of the Infiniti was waiting to turn left onto Route 176.
