Freeze fails to materialize in Arlington Heights; attention turns now to Critical Fire Conditions Friday and especially Saturday for Chicagoland.
A Freeze Warning was activated outside of the City of Chicago as temperatures in the upper 20 and even mid-20s were possible outside the city. The surface high pressure nearby was not optimally positioned for the coldest extreme overnight, but a cool and very dry air mass favored a boundary layer quickly decoupling outside of the Chicago urban heat island. Lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s outside the city appeared reasonable, with some mid 20s possible in the usual cool spots along and west of the Fox Valley.
UPDATE: No visible frost Friday morning and no dew on leaves on grass. The Dew Point was 22-23°F at midnight Thursday/Friday and 24°F overnight through 6:51 a.m. Friday. Relative Humidity was only 43% at 11:51 p.m.Thursday and gradually rose to 59% at 6:51 a.m. Friday at the National Weather Service station at O’Hare International Airport.
Here is a look at this morning's chilly low temperatures. Due to most of the area reaching sub-freezing temps overnight and because the growing season is coming to an end, we will not be issuing any more frost/freeze advisories, watches, or warnings until next spring. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/pBaKtTSdwS

Arlington Heights was on the edge of the freeze line with northwest Arlington Heights more likely to report a freezing temperature than southeast Arlington Heights. Central Arlington Heights held to 37°F at 6:00 a.m. Areas south and east of O’Hare International Airport including the airport were not issued a Freeze Warning last night, but Arlington Heights was issued a Freeze Warning. As of 6:00 a.m. it appears Arlington Heights will stay above freezing for Friday morning.
At 2:22 a.m. the fall in temperature was lagging the forecast by about 2°F with a temperature of 40°F instead of 38°F.
Some weather concerns remain …
* Freezing temperatures tonight further outside of Chicago
* Gusty winds and elevated fire danger on Friday afternoon
* Isolated to widely scattered showers on Friday afternoon, some
possibly producing graupel (small hail)
* Very strong southerly winds gusting up to 45-50+ mph on
Saturday and possibly Critical Fire Weather conditions
Weather Radar in northeast Illinois was clear 10:40 p.m. Thursday through 6:00 a.m. Friday.
While today will see low relative humidity and gusty winds, Saturday will be even drier and especially more windy. Confidence is increasing in gusts to 45 to possibly 50 mph. This is enough to impact many tented structures. Postpone any planned burning. #ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/rzxHU26dOY

Weather melody of the week is WINDY and it's on repeat. This continues today and especially Sat. Combined with dryness this also results in an increasing fire weather risk. While spotty showers north of I-80 today & possibly Sat A.M., next main chance of rain in Sun.#ILwx #INwx pic.twitter.com/tojYcqCRbj
