Two found dead, one found injured in fierce extra-alarm condominium fire on Waters Edge Drive in Glendale Heights.
A few residents of the Water’s Edge Condominium Complex in Glendale Heights thought they heard gunshot as a fierce fire broke out in a condominium building about 10:02 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2020. They were right.
Shafath Khan, 46, and his 4-year-old son, Salman each died from a gunshot wound to the head when an extra alarm fire began in the building where they lived.
The gunshots are the provisional causes of death for Shafath Khan, age 46, and his son, Salman, age 4. Their bodies were recovered Monday, August 24, 2020 after an explosion and fire that was extinguished at the Waters Edge condo complex.
The causes of death will be concluded when toxicology tests are completed.
Autopsies of the father and son indicated their bodies were charred, and Salman Khan had a low level of carbon monoxide in his blood, according to DuPage County Coroner Richard A. Jorgensen, MD, FACS. The low carbon monoxide level could indicate he was not breathing any smoke and gases as the fire and smoke spread through his condominium unit. According to Jorgensen, no heroic efforts would have saved the two that were killed. Glendale Heights police officers helped other residents of the three-story condominium building escape.
Police officers on the scene witnessed an explosion followed by a fire, and three Glendale Heights police officers were able to carry a 6-year-old child out to safety. The 6-year-old was treated and released from a local hospital. Police officers weren’t able to re-enter the unit because of rapidly spreading fire, heat and heavy smoke. The back stairs were completely burned and unusable. The officers also were treated for minor injuries and released.
The cause of explosion and fire remains under investigation by Glendale Heights Police Department, the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District, the DuPage County Coroner, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force. An ATF investigator may have been at the scene within an hour of the fire being extinguished.
The fire was very extensive for a fire that broke out during the middle of the day and likely would have had several people aware of smoke and fire. The rapid rate of fire extension was suspicious by itself, and authorities publicly declared that the fire was suspicious on Tuesday.
