On Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. Western Illinois University announced that Western Illinois University freshman Kavion Poplous, 18, of Chicago, is in custody in Chicago. Kavion has been charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. Poplous turned himself in at a Chicago Police Department (CPD) precinct and was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), with assistance of the CPD, at approximately 1:35 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 16).
A warrant has been issued for WIU freshman Kavion Poplous, 18, who allegedly shot his roommate Tuesday evening, September 15, 2020 in their Thompson Hall dormitory room. The victim was transported to McDonough District Hospital in Macomb and then transferred to another hospital. He is currently out of surgery; however, his condition was initially not released.
The school said the shooting was related to a roommate dispute, and police say it was an isolated incident.
Kavion Poplous faces charges including Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. A search for Poplous was immediately underway Tuesday night. WIU Macomb and Quad Cities campuses were closed Wednesday, Sept. 16 and all classes were canceled. All buildings, including residence halls, remain locked until further notice.
