Illinois State Police and firefighter/paramedics from Skokie, Wilmette and Northfield responded about 11:49 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2020 to a report of a serious crash with entrapment.
Firefighter/paramedics from Skokie, Wilmette and Northfield responded to the crash scene. A total of four ambulances responded to the scene. An Emergency Room physician stopped to help crash victims, and left his car at the crash scene while traveling in the back of one of the ambulances.
Three people on motorcycles were transported by firefighter/paramedics to Evanston Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition. Two people in a passenger vehicle were initially reported to have minor injuries, and were transported to NorthShore Skokie Hospital, where they were listed in good condition.
Southbound (inbound) Edens Expressway (I-94 East) traffic was diverted at Lake Street and Northbound (outbound) Edens Expressway (I-94 West) traffic was diverted off at Old Orchard. Local police from Glenview, Northfield, Skokie, and Wilmette assisted Illinois State Police with traffic control. Northbound lanes of I-94 were opened at about 12:05 a.m. Southbound lanes were reopened by 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction kept the inbound Edens Expressway closed most of the night (early morning hours). Initial investigation indicates that the motorcyclists were southbound at high speed when one of the motorcyclists hit a towing trailer, which caused the vehicle to hit an expressway wall, and caused other motorcycles to crash.
